Mobiltherm® 610: Closed systems (up to 315°C), Open systems (up to 250°C)
Mobiltherm® heat transfer oils must not be mixed with other oils, as this can impair their excellent thermal and oxidative stability, which may lead to changes in other properties and complicate the analyses used to determine the oil’s service life.
If the oil is used above the recommended operating temperature, a gas bubble may form, unless the equipment is designed to operate at a higher temperature by pressurizing it with an inert gas such as nitrogen.
At higher temperatures, the oil’s service life is shortened because thermal degradation increases significantly as the temperature rises above the recommended limit. In a well-designed system, the temperature of the oil film in the heating element should be maintained at approximately 15°C to 30°C above the oil’s bulk temperature. Higher temperatures shorten the oil’s service life and can lead to sludge and coke formation, which can impede heat transfer.
As with other mineral oils, Mobiltherm® heat transfer oils should only be used in systems equipped with a circulation pump. Systems in which the oil is moved solely by convection do not provide sufficient flow to prevent localized overheating and rapid oil degradation. Furthermore, these oils are not recommended for use in open systems where the hot oil is in direct contact with the air.
