Powdered charcoal is charcoal that has been ground into a fine powder, which means it has an extremely high surface-to-volume ratio. Despite its very fine particle size, it does not form significant dust because it dissolves very well in the liquids to which it is added.
PAC works much faster than granular forms because the adsorption pathways are much shorter. This makes it ideal for process applications where treatment time is limited, and for situations where the concentration of fast-moving contaminants needs to be reduced.
