Carbon Molecular Sieve (CMS) differs from other materials due to its unique pore structure, which is precisely tailored to the kinetic size differences between oxygen molecules (O₂) and nitrogen molecules (N₂). Although both molecules are similar in size, CMS adsorbs oxygen significantly faster than nitrogen.

In PSA cycles, compressed air is passed through a CMS bed under pressure, causing oxygen to adsorb much more quickly than nitrogen. When the pressure is reduced (desorption), the adsorbed oxygen is released, leaving pure nitrogen behind.

CMS is the key component in all small- to medium-sized PSA nitrogen generators found in industrial facilities, medical institutions, and laboratories.
